Your Guide To Canvas Art

Frameless, stylish and letting the art speak for itself; canvas art is an increasingly popular trend that gives the viewer complete immersion in art. Furthermore, without a glass frame, the art does not suffer from glare or reflections, allowing it to be enjoyed from every angle. So just what is canvas art, and is it right for you?

A guide to canvas art; canvas art is named after the surface it is painted on. The canvas is a durable piece of woven cloth, usually cotton, linen or polyester. However, the term canvas comes from the Latin word for cannabis as a canvas was traditionally made from hemp. The cloth is then typically stretched over a frame or a shape to give an artist a flat surface that they can paint on.

With canvas art, there is no visible hardware or frame. This can mean that the art can extend across the face of the canvas to the shorter sides of the canvas (although doesn’t have to). This helps to give a fantastic continuation of the art, while also providing a 3D effect.

Canvas art became popular in the 16th century Italian Renaissance era. This is because canvases were relatively cheap and easy to get hold of. They were also much easier to work with.

Today, canvases are still cost-effective and offer the benefit of being almost any size imaginable. As well as this, they are lightweight, portable and easy to display.

Five features of canvas art

Texture

One of the notable features of a canvas is its texture. Depending on the style and artist’s preference, this texture can be hidden through preparation or a gesso layer. This can also help to ensure the longevity of the painting. Alternatively, an artist may choose to incorporate this texture into their design.

Size

Canvases can come in a vast range of shapes and sizes. However, the lightweight feature of canvas art means that large paintings can be hung easily in homes without damage to the walls. As a result, canvas art is the ideal choice if you’re looking for a huge feature piece in your home or a dramatic piece of wall art that delivers the wow factor.

Frameless

As canvas art requires no frame, it means that it becomes almost a window into the art. It invites the viewer to become immersed in the painting. This gives the artwork the full impact and emotion that the artist wants to achieve.

The fact that it is frameless also means it is versatile. It can be hung directly, or you can use a floater frame to give depth to the piece.

Multi-panels

Another benefit of canvas art is that you can extend the art across multiple canvas panels. This helps to create a story across different canvases while also linking each piece of art. Using several canvas panels offers another dimension to the artwork and can provide a more significant piece of art while still being easy to hang and transport when needed.

Lighting

Unlike a framed piece of art, canvas art typically doesn’t require any form of specialist lighting. While framed pieces suffer from light reflecting off the glass creating distortion, canvas paintings do not have this issue, meaning they are more flexible and can work well in all manner of light.

Furthermore, the anti-humidity properties of canvas mean that art can be positioned almost anywhere in the home, including the kitchen and bathroom. These are often rooms where art is neglected. However, with canvas art, it can help to ensure you have beautiful focal points in every room of the house.
